Eugen Enderlen earned his medical doctorate in 1888 from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, where he served as an assistant to Otto Bollinger and Hans Ernst August Buchner. This foundational training propelled him through a series of academic surgical posts across the German Reich, eventually establishing him as a significant researcher in specialized nerve and vascular surgical procedures.
Academic Progression
Enderlen obtained his habilitation at the University of Greifswald in 1895. By the following year, he moved to Marburg University to work as an assistant to Ernst Küster. His career advanced steadily, leading to an associate professorship in 1899 and the chair of surgery at the University of Basel in 1904. He later relocated to the University Hospital at the University of Würzburg in 1908. During World War I, he served in the capacity of a general physician, and in 1918, he secured the position of professor of surgery at Heidelberg University.

Specializing in complex operations, Enderlen focused his work on nerves and blood vessels, alongside treatments for gallstone disorders and ulcers. He developed techniques specifically for esophageal surgery. In collaboration with physiologist Ludolf von Krehl, he performed denervation operations on the heart and stellate ganglion blocks. Furthermore, he engaged in experimental research regarding the transplantation of joints, bones, and blood vessels.
Published Works
Enderlen contributed to surgical literature through both academic research and diagnostic instruction. In 1906, he co-authored Stereoskopbilder zur Lehre von den Hernien with Emil Gasser. This work remains a key reference point for his professional output during his tenure in the German university system.
