War and Political Formation
Throughout the Second World War, he participated in the resistance, surviving multiple arrests and time in a German concentration camp. His early journalism career included contributions to outlets such as Het Parool, Le Peuple, and Agence France-Presse, while he simultaneously operated as a prominent voice within the Fourth International secretariat.

Mandel pursued his academic credentials later in life, graduating from the École pratique des hautes études in 1967 and earning a PhD from the Free University of Berlin in 1972. His publication, Marxist Economic Theory, established his reputation, facilitating a professional relationship with Che Guevara regarding economic planning in Cuba. He later taught at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and delivered the Alfred Marshall Lectures at the University of Cambridge in 1978.
International Advocacy and Legal Battles
The United States government restricted Mandel's travel for several years, a policy upheld by the Supreme Court in the 1972 case Kleindienst v. Mandel. Despite such barriers and being officially barred from West Germany, he campaigned for the rehabilitation of individuals involved in the 1936-1938 Moscow Trials and advocated for the cancellation of debt in developing nations. He remained active in political discourse until his death in 1995.
