Early Development and Education
Born in Bergen in 1961, Solberg attended Langhaugen videregående skole and later graduated from the University of Bergen in 1986. Her academic focus included sociology, political science, statistics, and economics. During her youth, she demonstrated an early interest in public life, joining the board of the School Student Union of Norway and organizing the national charity event Operasjon Dagsverk in 1979.

Solberg began her career in municipal politics as a deputy member of the Bergen city council. In 1989, she secured a seat in the Storting, beginning a legislative career that saw her re-elected multiple times. From 2001 to 2005, she served as the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development under Kjell Magne Bondevik. Her actions during this period, including specific immigration directives, led media outlets to assign her the moniker Iron Erna.
Leading the Conservative Party
In 2004, Solberg assumed the leadership of the Conservative Party, a position she held until 2026. Following an electoral loss in 2009, she transitioned her political rhetoric from a focus on austerity toward a more pragmatic management style. In her 2011 book, People, Not Billions, she outlined a strategy centered on economic restructuring and job creation, advocating for tax reforms while maintaining the existing welfare state structures.
The Blue-Blue Cabinet
Following the 2013 election, Solberg became prime minister, leading a minority coalition between the Conservative and Progress parties. Her administration later expanded to include the Liberal Party in 2018 and the Christian Democratic Party in 2019. Throughout her time in office, she balanced the interests of diverse coalition partners before the government lost its parliamentary majority after the 2021 election, at which point she transitioned to the role of Leader of the Opposition.
