Early Career and Corporate Beginnings
Moving from his birthplace of Bergamo to Milan at age three, Olmi eventually entered the workforce at sixteen as a messenger for the power utility Edison-Volta. Inspired by the films of Roberto Rossellini, he persuaded his employer to establish an internal documentary unit. He headed this department, refining his technical skills through extensive field work. His transition to feature filmmaking began with Time Stood Still in 1959, an effort that evolved directly from a corporate assignment regarding a hydroelectric dam.

Olmi achieved critical success with Il Posto in 1961, which depicted the entry of a young man into corporate life, utilizing experiences from his own tenure at Edison-Volta. The production featured Loredana Detto, an non-professional actor whom Olmi married in 1963. He frequently assumed multiple roles on set, including cinematography, writing, and editing. His project The Tree of Wooden Clogs, which drew upon stories told by his grandmother concerning rural life, received the Palme d'Or at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival. In 1988, his work La leggenda del santo bevitore secured the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Educational Contributions and Later Years
Beyond his directorial work, Olmi founded the film school Ipotesi Cinema in Bassano del Grappa in 1982. Throughout his career, he accumulated numerous accolades, including multiple David di Donatello awards for his direction of Il Posto, La leggenda del santo bevitore, and The Profession of Arms. In 2008, he accepted the Honorary Golden Lion at Venice after having declined the same honor in 2004. Olmi spent his final decades on the Asiago plateau, maintaining a private lifestyle until his death on 7 May 2018.
