Early Education and Influences
Born in 1910 to composer Sigurd von Koch, Erland von Koch attended Östra Real before enrolling at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm between 1931 and 1935. He attained advanced certifications as an organist and choirmaster. Following this period, he traveled to Germany and France from 1936 to 1938 to further his technical mastery, studying composition under Paul Höffer, conducting with Clemens Krauss, and piano with Claudio Arrau. Von Koch balanced his creative work with teaching and media production. He held a position at the Karl Wohlfarts Musikschule from 1939 to 1945, during which time he served as a radio choirmaster and sound expert. In 1953, he joined the faculty of the Royal College of Music in Stockholm as a lecturer in harmony, achieving the rank of professor in 1968. He remained in this academic capacity until 1975, contributing to the instruction of new generations of Swedish musicians.
Compositional Output
His catalogue includes six symphonies, notably the fifth, titled Lapponica, which focused on Sami culture, and the sixth, Salvare la terra, completed in 1992. His stage works feature the 1948 opera Pelle Svanslös and the ballet Askungen, composed between 1961 and 1963. He was also a prolific contributor to cinema, providing scores for numerous films including Crisis, A Ship to India, and Port of Call.
