A time of 2:11.83 in the 1000 metres set in 2026 established Emmanuel Wanyonyi as a world record holder. Born in Trans-Nzoia county, Kenya, in 2004, the middle-distance specialist ascended to global prominence through sustained excellence in the 800 metres, capturing consecutive major championship titles and securing a top-tier position in all-time performance rankings.
Early life and athletic discovery
Wanyonyi grew up as the fifth of twelve children. Financial constraints forced him to leave primary school at age ten to work as a cattle herder. After the death of his father when he was eighteen, his mother relocated with his younger siblings. His running talent eventually caught the eye of a teacher, who encouraged him to return to school. His abilities were subsequently identified by Janeth Jepkosgei, who facilitated his connection with coach Claudio Berardelli.
