Emiliano Sala

Argentine association football player (1990-2019)

Emiliano Sala became the subject of an intensive air-sea search on 21 January 2019 after a Piper Malibu aircraft carrying him over the English Channel disappeared from radar. The search effort covered 4,400 square kilometres of water, eventually leading to the discovery of the wreckage and the recovery of his body in February 2019.

Early Development in Argentina

Born in 1990 in the town of Cululú, Santa Fe Province, Sala was raised in Progreso. His early youth football was played at San Martín de Progreso until the age of 15. He later relocated to San Francisco, Córdoba, to join the Proyecto Crecer football school. This institution held direct affiliations with European clubs such as RCD Mallorca and FC Girondins de Bordeaux, providing a pipeline for scouting local talent. He moved into a boarding house to facilitate his training before seeking opportunities abroad.

European Progression and Loans

Sala moved to Europe at age 20 to sign with Bordeaux. After limited first-team opportunities, he gained experience through successive loan spells. During a stint at Championnat National side US Orléans, he scored 19 goals in 37 appearances. He followed this at Ligue 2 club Chamois Niortais, where he set a new seasonal club record by scoring 18 league goals. A subsequent loan at SM Caen in 2015 saw him net five goals, confirming his proficiency in French football before returning to his parent club.

Impact at FC Nantes

In July 2015, Sala signed a permanent five-year contract with Nantes for a reported fee of €1 million. Over the next three seasons, he established himself as the club's primary attacking threat, finishing as their top goalscorer in three consecutive campaigns. He surpassed 100 Ligue 1 appearances for the club. His sustained performance in the French league attracted interest from Cardiff City, which resulted in a transfer move in January 2019 for a club-record fee of £15 million.
