Osann held professional appointments at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He served as an assistant in a polyclinic established by his uncle, Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland. By 1826, he secured a position as a full professor of Heilmittellehre. His administrative responsibilities expanded in 1833 when he assumed the directorship of the clinic. In 1837, he undertook the role of sole editor for the Journal der praktischen Heilkunde.
Contributions to Balneology
The scientific examination of mineral springs became the focus of Osann's research. His 1822 collaboration with B. Trommsdorff, regarding the springs at Kaiser-Franzensbad, demonstrated an early interest in the intersection of chemical analysis and medical application. Through his expansive multi-volume publications, he refined the methodology for classifying and utilizing healing waters, cementing his reputation within the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Academy of Sciences of Turin.
