Early Career and Transition
Abeylegesse began her athletic path in Ethiopia, representing the junior team at the 1999 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Belfast. Following an invitation to Istanbul, she relocated to Turkey, acquired citizenship, and adopted the name Elvan Can, later changing it to Elvan Abeylegesse. Under the guidance of coach Ertan Hatipoglu at the Enka Sports Club, she established herself as a significant talent in European track events.
International Successes
By 2001, she won European titles in both the 3000 m and 5000 m in Grosseto. Her 2004 season marked a peak in performance, highlighted by the 5000 m world record in Norway. She maintained high standards in subsequent years, including a joint victory at the 2008 World 10K Bangalore and a 1:07:07 finish at the 2010 Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon, which stood as the fastest time for a woman at that distance.

Beyond her speed on the track, she was recognized for her conduct during the 2009 World Championships. Moments before the 10,000 metres final, she lent her own running shoes to competitor Meselech Melkamu. This action led to her receiving the 2010 Pierre de Coubertin World Fair Play Trophy.
Regulatory Sanctions
In August 2015, the Turkish Athletics Federation identified that a sample provided by Abeylegesse during the 2007 World Championships tested positive for a controlled substance. Following subsequent confirmation of the result on 29 March 2017, authorities expunged her results recorded between 25 August 2007 and 25 August 2009. This decision resulted in a two-year ban and the loss of multiple international medals, including those from the 2008 Olympics.
Personal Life and Recent Competition
After marrying Semeneh Debelie in February 2011, she took a break from the sport to give birth to her daughter, Arsema, later that year. Returning to competitive racing in 2012, she expanded her range to include road races, finishing as a runner-up at the 20 Kilomètres de Paris and the 2013 Istanbul Marathon, where she clocked 2:29:30.
