The Taulumäki Church in Jyväskylä serves as a primary example of the modernist structural contributions made by Elsi Borg throughout her professional career. Born in Nastola in 1893, she developed a dual practice that encompassed both architecture and the visual arts, eventually becoming a central figure within the Finnish architectural community during the mid-twentieth century.
Professional Training and Early Associations
Borg completed her formal education at the Helsinki University of Technology, graduating in 1919. Her early career coincided with the formalization of support networks for female practitioners in the field. In 1919, she collaborated with colleagues including Elli Ruuth, Elsa Arokallio, Salme Setälä, Eva Kuhlefeld, and Aili-Salli Ahde-Kjäldman to establish the Tumstocken association. This initiative preceded her role in the founding of the Finnish Association of Women Architects, which sought to address the professional integration of women in the architectural sector.

The death of her brother, architect Kaarlo Borg, in 1939 necessitated a transition in her responsibilities regarding the Lastenlinna Children's Hospital in Helsinki. She assumed leadership of the design process, collaborating with Otto Flodin and Olavi Sortta to finalize the facility in 1948. Her involvement with institutional healthcare architecture continued until the end of her life; in 1958, she designed an extension for the same hospital. The structure is recognized by DOCOMOMO Finland as a site of historical architectural significance. Prior to this, she had also partnered with Olavi Sortta on the design of a military hospital located in Vyborg.
State Recognition and Legacy
Borg maintained her practice primarily across Helsinki, Jyväskylä, and Vyborg. Her professional service and contributions to Finnish architecture were formally acknowledged through several state honors. She received the Cross of Liberty, 4th Class, in 1918, followed by a Memorial medal of the Winter War. In 1949, the state granted her the title of Knight First Class of the Order of the Lion of Finland. She died in 1958.
