Early Career and Initial Success
Kiplagat began her transition into elite competition through track and cross-country events. She earned a silver medal at the 1996 World Junior Championships in the 3000 metres, followed by a bronze in the same event two years later. By 2006, she recorded personal bests in the 5000 metres and the half marathon, while securing victories at the Virginia Beach Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon and the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco.

In 2011, she reached a career milestone by capturing the gold medal at the World Championships in Daegu. Despite a mid-race fall, she finished with a time of 2:28:43, contributing to a historic Kenyan medal sweep. She successfully defended her world title in 2013, becoming the first woman to retain the marathon gold.
