Formative Years and On a Friday
O'Brien studied economics at the University of Manchester after forming the group On a Friday with schoolmates at Abingdon in 1985. The name derived from their typical rehearsal schedule. During his youth, he played violin and sang in a choir, identifying music as a personal sanctuary following his parents' separation when he was ten. The band eventually signed with EMI in 1991 and rebranded as Radiohead.

As Radiohead evolved through albums like Pablo Honey, The Bends, and OK Computer, O'Brien refined a specific technical role. While his bandmates focused on rhythm and bass, he utilized sustain units, effects, and the EBow to provide backing vocals and atmospheric textures. His work on OK Computer moved away from overt distortion toward expansive, layered soundscapes.
Collaborative Projects and Solo Work
Outside of his primary band, O'Brien participated in the 7 Worlds Collide project with Neil Finn and Philip Selway, contributing to their 2009 album The Sun Came Out. Inspired by time spent on a Brazilian farm near Ubatuba, he launched a solo career under the name EOB. His debut album, Earth, arrived in April 2020 via Capitol Records, followed by the release of Blue Morpho in May 2026.
Public Advocacy and Recognition
O'Brien has engaged in various social causes, including environmental activism. He became an informal patron for Extinction Rebellion in 2018, citing the group as an enlightened organization. In 2019, he represented Radiohead at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
