The Forgotten Realms campaign setting originated from a collection of cardboard boxes filled with handwritten notes and hand-drawn maps that Ed Greenwood sold to TSR in 1986. This transfer of intellectual property paved the way for the extensive expansion of a fictional multiverse that the Canadian author had been meticulously developing since the mid-1960s.
Early Development and the Gaming Table
Raised in the Don Mills suburb of Toronto, Greenwood began constructing his fantasy world as a child. He viewed these stories as a playground for swords and sorcery narratives. Upon discovering the Dungeons & Dragons game in 1975, he integrated his personal setting into his own gaming campaigns. His focus on specific locales like Waterdeep and Shadowdale grew as he pushed to provide his players with deep, realistic details about the inhabitants and their daily routines. In 1979, he introduced the public to this world through a series of articles in The Dragon magazine, beginning with the 30th issue.

Take the IQ test →Collaboration with TSR
When TSR sought a new setting for the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons second edition, Jeff Grubb investigated Greenwood's published material. Following their successful negotiations, which included a $5,000 fee and a contract for novels, the Forgotten Realms Campaign Set was published in 1987. Greenwood continued to shape the evolution of this world for decades. Even during TSR's period of financial instability in the late 1990s, his commitment to the project remained firm, and he continued his contributions after Wizards of the Coast acquired the company.
Beyond the Realms
While recognized for his extensive work on the Forgotten Realms, including titles such as Cormyr, City of Splendors, and the Volo's Guide series, Greenwood has maintained a prolific career across other platforms. He contributed to the Silver Age Sentinels role-playing game and authored the Castlemourn setting, which was introduced by Margaret Weis Productions between 2006 and 2008. His body of work includes over thirty-five novels and more than two hundred articles and game products. Outside of his literary output, he has maintained a career as a librarian, having served at the North York Community Library since 1974.
