Douglas Wakiihuri

The gold medal in the marathon at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics in Rome went to Douglas Wakiihuri, marking a milestone for Kenyan long-distance running. Born on 26 September 1963 in Mombasa, Wakiihuri established himself as a force in international athletics by securing significant victories on the global stage throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s.

International Competition Record

Wakiihuri sustained a high level of performance across multiple major events. Following his 1987 success in Rome, he earned a silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, finishing behind Gelindo Bordin. His competitive career continued through the early 1990s, including an appearance at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. For nearly two decades, his 1987 performance remained the benchmark for male Kenyan marathoners until Luke Kibet achieved a world championship title in 2007.

Professional Marathon Victories

Beyond championship events, Wakiihuri secured wins in prominent city marathons. He achieved victory at the 1989 London Marathon and followed this with a win at the New York Marathon in 1990. During these races, he gained recognition for the white gloves he consistently wore while competing. Throughout his peak years, he was attached to the company S&B Foods.

Career Transition

Following his retirement from professional athletics competition, Wakiihuri transitioned into coaching and fitness instruction. He currently manages a marathon fitness center and training school. His professional activities utilize both English and Japanese languages, reflecting his international career experience.
