Early Career and Sales Ascent
Born in Nanjing in 1954 to a working-class family, Dong Mingzhu moved to Shenzhen in 1990 to seek new employment. She began as a salesperson for Haley, the predecessor to Gree Electric. Operating in Anhui province, she successfully managed one-eighth of the company's total annual sales within four years. Her performance secured the attention of Zhu Jianghong, leading to her promotion to head of sales by 1994.

Dong transitioned into senior executive roles, becoming deputy president in 1996, president in 2001, and chairwoman in 2012. Under her direction, the company expanded into smartphone production, robotic technology, and solar energy, while establishing nationwide recycling centers. In March 2016, Gree Electric acquired the electric car manufacturer Yinlong. By fiscal 2023, the company reported profits of $4.1 billion, attributed to innovation and the development of 44 internationally leading technologies.

Dong served as a deputy for the 10th, 11th, and 12th National People's Congress. She maintains membership in the China Democratic National Construction Association and the 10th Executive Committee of the All-China Women's Federation. Her public statements have periodically generated controversy, including comments in 2025 regarding the recruitment of personnel educated abroad, which drew criticism from various domestic media outlets.
Personal Milestones
Widowed in 1984, Dong raised her son as a single parent after relocating for work. Her life and business approach were documented in the 2006 book Regretless Pursuit, which was later adapted into a television series on China Central Television. In 2018, she became the subject of a facial recognition error in Ningbo when a public surveillance system misidentified her image on a bus advertisement as a jaywalker.
