Early Development and European Loan
Born in Dalian in 1985, Dong drew attention as a youth player in 2000. He joined Dalian Sidelong and Dalian Shide before his transfer to Manchester. Due to initial work permit issues, he was loaned to Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Second Division. He established himself there, finishing the 2005-06 season as the league's top scorer with 18 goals.

Dong received a work permit in December 2006, allowing him to join the Manchester United first-team squad in January 2007. He made his Premier League debut on 9 May 2007 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He also appeared as a substitute in a UEFA Champions League match against Roma in December 2007. His contract with the club was mutually terminated in August 2008.
Global Club Career
After departing Manchester, Dong returned to Dalian Shide. He later pursued opportunities with Legia Warsaw, Portimonense, and the Armenian side Mika, where he secured the 2011 Armenian Cup. His later professional years were spent in China with Hunan Billows and Hebei Zhongji, where he recorded a combined 11 goals across his final domestic appearances.
International Representation
Dong featured in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship and the 2007 AFC Asian Cup. His international highlight occurred during the 2008 Summer Olympics. In the opening match against New Zealand, he scored an 88th-minute goal to secure a 1-1 draw for the host nation.
