Dominik Hašek began his professional career at age 16 in his native Pardubice, becoming the youngest player in the history of the Czechoslovak Extraliga. Often referred to as The Dominator, the Czech athlete redefined the standards for goaltending in the National Hockey League, overcoming early professional barriers to become a two-time Stanley Cup champion.
Early Career in Czechoslovakia
Born in 1965, Hašek developed his game in the Czechoslovak hockey system. He played for HC Pardubice and the army team Dukla Jihlava, winning the Golden Hockey Stick as the league's most valuable player in 1987, 1989, and 1990. He secured the Goaltender of the Year title for five consecutive seasons starting in 1986. His performances during the 1988 Winter Olympics garnered international attention, setting the stage for his eventual move to North American professional leagues.

Drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 10th round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, Hašek did not begin his NHL tenure until the 1990-91 season. Following a period with the Indianapolis Ice in the IHL, he served as a backup in Chicago. His breakout moment occurred during the 1992 Stanley Cup Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins. His play prompted a 1992 trade to the Buffalo Sabres, where he would establish his reputation as an elite goaltender.
Individual Honors and International Success
Hašek's career is marked by unprecedented individual recognition. He collected the Vezina Trophy in 1997 and 1998, and claimed the Hart Memorial Trophy in both years as well. In 1998, he led the Czech national team to an Olympic gold medal in Nagano. Throughout his career, he maintained the highest career save percentage in NHL history at 0.9223 and the third-highest single-season save percentage at 0.9366.
Longevity and Later Years
Hašek continued to compete into his 40s, winning his first Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 2002 and a second as a backup in 2008. After retiring in 2008, he returned to professional play with HC Pardubice in 2009 and Spartak Moscow in 2010. Following his final retirement in 2012, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014 and saw his jersey number retired by Buffalo and Pardubice.
