A cornerstone of the Brazilian national squad, he remains one of only three footballers in history to secure a place in three distinct FIFA World Cup All-Star teams.
Early Career at Portuguesa
Born in 1929 in São Paulo, Santos began his journey in professional football with Portuguesa. He initially trained as a central defender before transitioning to the right flank. Between 1949 and 1958, he recorded 434 appearances for the club. His time at Portuguesa included significant accolades, such as the Rio-São Paulo Tournament titles in 1952 and 1955, as well as the Fita Azul honors in 1951 and 1953.

Upon joining Palmeiras, Santos appeared in 498 matches. His tenure featured domestic dominance, securing the Paulista Championship in 1959, 1963, and 1966. He also claimed the Brazilian Championship in 1960 and 1967, alongside the 1967 Brazil Cup. During a brief exhibition event in 1960, he made a guest appearance for São Paulo to help inaugurate Morumbi Stadium, contributing to a 3-0 victory against Nacional of Uruguay.
International Dominance
Santos represented Brazil in four consecutive World Cups from 1954 to 1966. After debuting in the 1954 tournament, he contributed to Brazil’s global triumphs in 1958 and 1962. During the 1962 final against Czechoslovakia, his offensive intuition allowed him to loft a high ball into the goalmouth, forcing an error by the opposing goalkeeper that led to a goal for Vavá. He ultimately accumulated 98 official caps for the national team.
Final Years
Continuing his professional activity until age 42, Santos concluded his playing days at Atlético Paranaense. Following his retirement from the pitch, he settled in Uberaba. He remained there for two decades until his death on 23 July 2013, which followed a period of hospitalization caused by pneumonia and severe hemodynamic instability.
