Academic Formation and Early Work
Van Dalen pursued studies in mathematics, physics, and astronomy at the University of Amsterdam. His research focus solidified around the influence of Brouwer and Heyting. In 1963, he attained his doctorate from the University of Amsterdam, submitting the thesis titled Extension problems in intuitionistic plane projective geometry.

Following his doctoral studies, Van Dalen held a position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he taught logic and mathematics from 1964 to 1966. He subsequently spent time at Oxford before accepting a professorship at Utrecht University in 1967. Throughout his career in Utrecht, he continued to contribute to both the mathematical community and the history of science.
Research and Authorship
Van Dalen authored, co-authored, and edited numerous texts covering set theory, constructivism, and the philosophical foundations of mathematics. His publication list includes Logic and Structure, released in five editions, and the two-volume Constructivism in Mathematics, written with Anne Sjerp Troelstra. He also produced biographical works on Brouwer, including Mystic, Geometer and Intuitionist and the 2013 title L.E.J. Brouwer - Topologist, Intuitionist, Philosopher.
