Professional Origins in Belgium
Cools began his developmental years at Tempo Overijse before joining OH Leuven at age nine. After a brief period with the Anderlecht youth system, he returned to the OH Leuven academy, signing his first professional contract in July 2014. He debuted for the first team on 3 August 2014 against Racing Mechelen and helped the squad secure promotion to the Belgian First Division A in May 2015.

In June 2015, Cools joined Club Brugge on a four-year deal. He established himself as a starting full-back during the 2016–17 season under Michel Preud'homme, maintaining his role following the transition to coach Ivan Leko. His time in Bruges saw him collect two national titles before his playing time diminished following the rise of Clinton Mata.
European Journeys and Transfers
In January 2020, Cools moved to the Danish side Midtjylland. His progression was hampered by foot and pelvic injuries, alongside challenges in social integration. After an unsuccessful loan spell at Zulte Waregem, he moved to the Czech club FK Jablonec in September 2022. By January 2023, he transitioned to the Thai League 1 with Buriram United, where he secured a domestic treble in his first season.

Having represented Belgium at various youth levels, including 28 caps, Cools eventually opted to represent Malaysia, the country of his birth. His senior debut occurred on 3 June 2021 against the UAE. He later secured Malaysia's spot in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup by scoring against Bangladesh and subsequently led the team as captain during the tournament.
