Diogo Costa

Diogo Meireles da Costa, born on 19 September 1999 in Rothrist, Switzerland, serves as the primary goalkeeper for Porto and the Portugal national team. Since integrating into Porto's youth system in 2011, he has progressed to lead the first team as captain, securing multiple domestic honors including Primeira Liga titles and the Taça de Portugal.

Early Development and Youth Career

Moving to Santo Tirso, Portugal, at age seven, Costa began his training at the AMCH Ringe academy. After a two-year period at Póvoa de Lanhoso, he joined Porto's youth academy in 2011. He made his senior debut with Porto's reserve side on 6 August 2017. His performance during this period included winning the UEFA Youth League in 2019, where Porto defeated Chelsea 3–1 in Nyon.

Rise to First-Team Regular

Costa made his competitive debut for the first team on 25 September 2019 during a Taça da Liga fixture. Following limited appearances in his initial seasons, he established himself as the starting goalkeeper during the 2021–22 campaign. That season, he helped Porto secure a domestic double and was named the Primeira Liga Goalkeeper of the Year. In October 2021, he signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until 2026.

Champions League Performance and Captaincy

During the 2022 Champions League group stage, Costa set a record as the first goalkeeper to save three consecutive penalties in the competition's history, stopping spot-kicks against Bayer Leverkusen and Club Brugge. He achieved his 100th appearance for Porto on 14 March 2023. Following the retirement of Pepe in July 2024, Costa assumed the captaincy, leading the squad to a league title in the 2025–26 season while setting a record of 21 clean sheets.
