Early Career and Nickname
Born in Buenos Aires in 1970, Simeone began his professional football journey with Vélez Sarsfield in 1987. During his youth development, coach Victorio Spinetto gave him the nickname "Cholo" because his style of play mirrored that of the former Boca Juniors player Carmelo Simeone. In 1990, he transferred to the Italian side Pisa, where he played until the club's relegation.

Simeone played for several clubs across Europe, including Sevilla, Inter Milan, and Lazio. His most significant accomplishments as a player occurred in Spain and Italy. With Atlético Madrid, he achieved a domestic double in 1996, securing both the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey. Later, at Lazio, he contributed to a Serie A title and a Coppa Italia victory during the 1999–2000 season. His international career included appearances in three FIFA World Cups—1994, 1998, and 2002—and winning two Copa América titles in 1991 and 1993.
Managerial Tenure at Atlético Madrid
After coaching stints at Racing Club, Estudiantes, River Plate, San Lorenzo, and Catania, Simeone joined Atlético Madrid in 2011. He transformed the club into a consistent contender for the La Liga title, effectively challenging the dominance of Real Madrid and Barcelona. His tenure has yielded two league championships, one Copa del Rey, two UEFA Europa Leagues, and two UEFA Super Cups. He also guided the team to two UEFA Champions League finals.
