Winning the Miss Universe 2017 title in Las Vegas transformed Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters into a global figure in the pageant circuit. Born in Sedgefield on 28 June 1995, she balanced academic obligations at North-West University with competitive modeling, eventually securing the premier international crown for South Africa for the second time in the country's history.
Academic and Early Competitive Background
Before achieving international prominence, Nel-Peters engaged in multiple beauty pageant circuits. She competed as a finalist in the 2010 Miss Teen SA and secured the Miss Varsity Cup title in 2015. Her formal education concluded at North-West University, where she finished her degree in March 2017, only days prior to entering the Miss South Africa 2017 competition.

Representing the Western Cape, she captured the national title in March 2017. Although initially designated to represent her country at both Miss World and Miss Universe, scheduling conflicts limited her participation to the latter. During the finals, she articulated positions on pay equity for women and the necessity of overcoming personal fears. She was crowned by Iris Mittenaere in Bangkok, Thailand, officially ending her tenure on 17 December 2018 by passing the title to Catriona Gray.
Advocacy and Public Life
Following a carjacking incident in Hyde Park shortly after her national crowning, Nel-Peters utilized her platform to promote self-defence workshops for women. Her official duties as Miss Universe necessitated extensive travel, including visits to Indonesia, Thailand, India, Lebanon, Mexico, and the Philippines. Beyond pageantry, she has entered the literary field with titles released through Thomas Nelson, including 2024's A Crown that Lasts and various 2025 releases. She also participated as a model in the 2024 film Indian 2.
Personal Milestones
Nel-Peters married Tim Tebow, a former American football quarterback, on 20 January 2020 in Franschhoek, Western Cape. The couple became engaged on 9 January 2019 at the Tebow family farm in Jacksonville, Florida. She is a Christian and maintains public records of her career and advocacy through her official platforms.
