Formative Years
Born Dean George Tanaka on July 31, 1966, at Selfridge Air Force Base in Michigan, he later adopted the surname of his stepfather, film director Christopher Cain. His biological father was of Japanese descent, while his mother, actress Sharon Thomas, provided his introduction to the entertainment industry. He spent his youth in Malibu, California, and completed his secondary education at Santa Monica High School before enrolling at Princeton.

Cain majored in American history at Princeton, where he excelled as a defensive player. After starting as a cornerback in 1985, he transitioned to free safety. His performance in 1987 earned him recognition as a first-team I-AA All-American and the John P. Poe–Richard W. Kazmaier Jr. Football Trophy. He finished his university tenure holding a school record of 22 interceptions across 30 games.
Television and Film Career
Following an injury-shortened stint with the Buffalo Bills in 1988, Cain transitioned into acting. He gained significant visibility in 1993 by securing the lead role in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, a series that maintained a high viewership for four seasons. His later production work included hosting Ripley's Believe It or Not! through his company, Angry Dragon Entertainment.
