Early Career and PayPal
Born in Cape Town in 1972, Sacks moved to Tennessee at age five. After graduating from Stanford University in 1994 and the University of Chicago Law School in 1998, he joined the e-commerce startup Confinity. As an inaugural product leader and eventual COO of PayPal, he managed global operations through the company's 2002 IPO and its subsequent $1.5 billion acquisition by eBay.

In 2006, Sacks founded Geni.com. During this tenure, he identified an internal communication tool that was spun off as Yammer in 2008. As a pioneer in enterprise social networking, Yammer achieved rapid growth before Microsoft acquired the company for $1.2 billion in 2012. He later served as interim CEO of Zenefits in 2016, where he implemented the Z2 product initiative and transitioned the firm to a software-as-a-service model.
Investment and Media
Sacks co-founded Craft Ventures in 2017, growing the firm’s assets under management to $3.3 billion by 2023. His investment portfolio includes SpaceX, Palantir Technologies, Uber, and Airbnb. Outside of venture capital, he produced the 2005 film Thank You for Smoking and the 2023 biopic Dalíland. He also launched the podcasting platform Callin in 2021, which was acquired by Rumble in 2023, and co-founded the AI-driven workspace tool Glue in 2024.
White House Tenure
In December 2024, President Donald Trump appointed Sacks as the White House AI and crypto czar. Serving as a special government employee, he worked to establish a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry and lead the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. He concluded his service in the administration in March 2026.
