David Robinson

American basketball player

David Robinson began his professional basketball journey in 1989 after concluding a two-year active-duty commitment with the United States Navy. Standing seven feet and one inch tall, the center spent his entire 14-year career with the San Antonio Spurs, where he functioned as a primary defensive force and a central offensive contributor for the franchise.

Military Service and Naval Academy

Born in Key West in 1965, Robinson attended Osbourn Park High School in Virginia before enrolling at the United States Naval Academy. Due to his exceptional height, he received a waiver to attend the academy. After graduating, he fulfilled his service obligation as a civil engineering officer stationed at the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia, attaining the rank of lieutenant (junior grade).

Spurs Transition and Early Accolades

Selected as the first overall pick in the 1987 NBA draft, Robinson joined the San Antonio Spurs for the 1989–90 season. He immediately catalyzed a significant team turnaround, leading the squad to a 56–26 record. His performance earned him the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 1990. By 1992, he secured further recognition, winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award and earning spots on the All-NBA Team and NBA All-Defensive Team.

Professional Honors and Later Education

Throughout his tenure in San Antonio, Robinson earned the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year in 2003 and the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award the same year. Following his retirement from professional play, he continued his academic pursuits, earning a Master of Arts in Administration from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2011 to better understand organizational development and business structures.
