Popovici began formal training at age nine under coach Adrian Rădulescu at Aqua Team Bucharest. During the 2021 European Junior Swimming Championships in Rome, Popovici captured four medals. He broke the 100-metre freestyle junior world record twice, notably achieving a 47.30 mark to win gold. He also set a junior world record in the 200-metre freestyle semifinal with a time of 1:45.26. That year, he participated in the 50, 100, and 200-metre freestyle events at the Olympics, finishing fourth in the 200-metre freestyle final with a time of 1:44.68.
2022 World Championship Dominance
In 2022, Popovici became the first swimmer since 1973 to win gold in both the 100-metre and 200-metre freestyle events at the same World Aquatics Championships. He clocked 1:43.21 in the 200-metre final, making him the fourth fastest performer in history for the distance. His performance earned him recognition as the Male Swimmer of the Year by both SwimSwam and Swimming World Magazine.

Beyond his Olympic success in the 200-metre event, Popovici earned a bronze medal in the 100-metre freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing within 0.01 seconds of silver medalist Kyle Chalmers.
