Early Life and Migration
Born in Messina, South Africa, to Jane and Andy Pocock, he spent his youth in Zimbabwe on a citrus estate in Beitbridge and later a mixed farm in Gweru. His formal education began at Midlands Christian College in Zimbabwe. Following the seizure of white-owned farms in 2000, his family relocated, staying briefly in Port Alfred, South Africa, before receiving Australian visas in 2002. They settled in Brisbane, where he attended the Anglican Church Grammar School.

He debuted for the Western Force in 2006 against the Sharks. His international career accelerated with his Australia debut against the Barbarians in 2008, followed by a test debut against New Zealand. He received the John Eales Medal in 2010 and was a finalist for the IRB International Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011. After moving to the ACT Brumbies in 2012, he endured significant injuries, including multiple knee reconstructions in 2013 and 2014. He later played for the Panasonic Wild Knights in Japan and retired from international rugby following the 2019 World Cup.
Political Transition
Pocock engaged in social and environmental advocacy throughout his sporting career, including a 2014 arrest during a protest against the Maules Creek mine. In the 2022 Australian federal election, he entered the political sphere as an independent candidate. He successfully defeated the Liberal incumbent Zed Seselja, securing one of the two Senate seats for the Australian Capital Territory, marking the first time since 1975 an independent represented the territory in the Senate.
