Early Development and Origins
Born on 17 July 1975, Virtanen began his musical journey while studying at Turku Polytechnic. Using computer-based tracker software, he cultivated his production skills throughout the 1990s. His stage name evolved from the nickname Rude Boy, inspired by his frequent playback of a track by Swedish artist Leila K at a classmate's party. In 1999, Virtanen submitted a demo of 'Sandstorm' to producer Jaakko Salovaara, known as JS16. The track was released via 16 Inch Records and achieved immediate international traction. It spent seventeen consecutive weeks at the top of the Finnish Dance Chart and became the first record by a Finnish artist to reach number three on the UK Singles Chart. Worldwide, the 12-inch single sold 2 million copies, becoming the highest-selling release of its kind in 2000. Its popularity extended to sporting event soundtracks and television, contributing to its sustained digital footprint.
Studio Albums and Touring
Virtanen released his debut album, Before the Storm, in September 2000. It sold 800,000 copies globally, secured three Finnish Grammy Awards, and reached number six on the US Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart. His second studio album, Rush, followed in 2003, peaking at number four on the Finnish weekly album chart. By 2007, he released his third studio album, Label This!, which included a collaboration with Blake Lewis. Throughout these years, he maintained a rigorous touring schedule across the United States and Eastern Europe.
Entrepreneurship and Later Projects
In 2011, Virtanen co-founded the record label EnMass Music to facilitate the release of mix compilations and his radio show, Salmiakki Sessions. He continued his live performance career at festivals, including the tenth anniversary of Tomorrowland in 2014 and the Future Music Festival in 2015. In August 2015, he released the album Moments, followed by an extensive tour. In 2019, he represented Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest alongside singer Sebastian Rejman with the track 'Look Away'.
