Born at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, O'Shaughnessy began his schooling at English Martyrs' near Elephant and Castle. O'Shaughnessy acquired his first typewriter at age fourteen, producing various unpublished comic scripts and short stories. His initial industry recognition occurred at fifteen when he placed as a runner-up in an RTÉ script-writing competition for a dark comedy titled A Day in the Morgue. Following his university graduation, he spent two years employed at a cable television company in Limerick before transitioning to full-time authorship.

The author debuted with the novel Ayuamarca in 1999, published by Orion Publishing Group. He later achieved global success with The Saga of Darren Shan, which launched with Cirque du Freak in 2000.
