The career of mathematician Darinka Dentcheva spans over four decades of development in convex analysis and stochastic programming. Born in 1958, she transitioned from a foundational education in Germany to an academic career in the United States, producing more than 70 research papers and two significant textbooks focused on mathematical optimization and risk-averse decision models.
Academic Foundation in Berlin
Dentcheva completed her formative mathematical training at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She earned her Master of Science degree in 1981, followed by a PhD in 1989. Her relationship with the institution continued for decades, culminating in 2006 when she was granted her Habilitation based on a dissertation focused on set-valued analysis.

Before relocating to the United States, Dentcheva served at the Institute of Mathematics within the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia from 1982 to 1994. Her transition to the American academic system included visiting roles at the Rutgers Center for Operations Research between 1997 and 1999, followed by a tenure as a visiting professor at Lehigh University during the 1999–2000 academic year. Since 2000, she has been a member of the faculty at the Stevens Institute of Technology, where she serves as a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and recently acted as Chair of the Faculty Senate for the 2023–2024 term.
Contributions to Optimization Theory
Dentcheva's work centers on the application of mathematical optimization to complex systems under uncertainty. Her research includes the development of the theory of Steiner selections of multifunctions and stochastic dominance constraints, the latter conducted in collaboration with Andrzej Ruszczyński. Furthermore, her contributions extend to practical engineering challenges, such as the unit commitment problem in power systems, which she investigated alongside Werner Römisch. These theoretical frameworks are documented in her co-authored books, including 2009's "Lectures on Stochastic Programming" and the 2024 publication "Risk-Averse Optimization: Theory and Methods."
