Singles' Day transformed from a modest university tradition into a multi-billion dollar commercial engine under the direction of Daniel Zhang. This event, held annually on November 11, represents one of the most significant shifts in Chinese retail history, cementing the influence of e-commerce platforms like Tmall while demonstrating the reach of digital marketplaces in the 21st century.
Professional Foundations
Born in Shanghai in 1972, Zhang pursued higher education at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. His early career navigated the instability of the financial services sector during the 1990s. Following graduation, he worked at Barings Bank prior to its collapse. Subsequently, he spent seven years at the accounting firm Arthur Andersen until its dissolution following the Enron scandal, followed by a two-year tenure at PwC starting in 2002.

Zhang joined the Alibaba ecosystem in 2007 as chief financial officer for the subsidiary Taobao. He quickly transitioned into leadership roles, serving as chief operating officer of Taobao before being appointed president of Tmall in 2011. His oversight of Tmall provided the infrastructure necessary to scale the Singles' Day shopping event into a global phenomenon. In 2013, he became chief operating officer of Alibaba Group, eventually succeeding Jonathan Lu as chief executive officer in 2015.
Leadership Transition
In September 2018, Jack Ma designated Zhang as his successor for the role of executive chairman, a transition that took effect in September 2019. By 2020, his influence in the global business landscape was recognized by his inclusion on Time's list of the 100 most influential people.
Departure from Operations
The company announced a restructuring plan in March 2023, dividing e-commerce operations into six distinct units. Zhang transitioned to lead the Cloud Intelligence Unit but announced his departure from this post in September 2023.
