Born in La Libertad in 1945, Daniel Ortega emerged as a central figure in the Nicaraguan Revolution that overthrew the Somoza regime in 1979. A former guerrilla fighter turned career politician, his leadership spans two distinct eras of Nicaraguan history, initially as a junta coordinator and later as a multi-term president with expanding executive authority.
Revolutionary Origins and Imprisonment
Ortega joined the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in 1963, rising through the ranks as an opponent of the US-backed government. His early activism led to repeated arrests, including a significant period of incarceration following a 1967 bank robbery. During his time at the Modelo jail, he wrote poetry, including 'En la prisión,' which was later published in the literary journal Casa de las Américas. He was eventually released in 1974 during a prisoner exchange and relocated to Cuba for further training in guerrilla warfare.

Take the IQ test →Ascent to the Presidency
Following the 1979 revolution, Ortega became a leader of the Junta of National Reconstruction. In 1985, he secured the presidency, overseeing a period defined by land reform, literacy initiatives, and conflict against the US-backed Contras. His first administration ended in 1990 after his defeat in the general election to Violeta Chamorro. After two failed presidential bids in 1996 and 2001, he returned to power in the 2006 general election.
Consolidation of Power
Since 2007, Ortega has maintained continuous control over the Nicaraguan state. His second tenure saw a shift away from earlier leftist policies and an increasing concentration of authority, leading to international criticism regarding democratic backsliding. Alongside his wife, Rosario Murillo, he has served as co-president since February 2025. His administration has faced intense scrutiny for the suppression of political opposition, the closure of numerous NGOs and media outlets, and the imprisonment of rivals, culminating in a 2026 declaration ending national elections.
