Foundations in Music
Balan received a second-hand accordion at age 11, marking his initial foray into music. Although he briefly pursued law studies at his parents' request, he eventually pivoted to performance. His first musical entity, the gothic doom metal band Inferialis, debuted in 1995. Following a concert in a Chișinău factory, he received professional synthesisers, later shifting his focus toward commercial pop production and releasing the solo track De la Mine in 1998.

In 1998, Balan co-founded the project O-Zone alongside Petru Jelihovschi. Their debut album, Dar unde esti?, achieved immediate success with seven tracks reaching number one on Moldovan radio. Following Jelihovschi's departure, Balan recruited Arsenie Todiraș and Radu Sirbu. Their 2002 album, Number 1, released by Cat Music, earned critical recognition at the MTV Romania Music Awards for the single Numai tu and the experimental track Despre Tine, which held the top spot on the Romania Airplay Top 100 for seventeen weeks.
Global Prominence and Transition
The 2003 release of Dragostea din tei solidified Balan's status as a major producer, with the song becoming one of the most successful singles in music history. The group's final album, DiscO-Zone, achieved platinum certification across multiple markets, including Japan and various European nations. In 2005, the band dissolved during the Golden Stag festival. Balan subsequently moved to Los Angeles to record a rock project, later experimenting with an ironic alter ego, Crazy Loop, launched in 2007.
