Early Career and Military Service
Born in 1818 in Ljubljana, Wurzbach initially pursued studies at the University of Graz between 1835 and 1837 before transitioning to a military career. He joined an Austrian infantry regiment in Cracow as a cadet, where he began publishing poetry under the pseudonym W. Constant. In 1841, he attained the rank of Unterleutnant and moved to Lemberg. During this period, he concurrently pursued academic interests at Lviv University, becoming the first active Austrian military officer to earn a doctorate in 1843.

His professional career in the capital included serving as a librarian for the Ministry of the Interior and later as a secretary within the Ministry of State, roles that likely facilitated his extensive research capabilities.

Wurzbach demonstrated expertise in German, Polish, Italian, French, and Slovene. His literary output was diverse, encompassing the study of folk songs in Poland and Ruthenia, as well as detailed monographs on the churches of Kraków and the works of Joseph Haydn.
