Colin Powell

Colin Powell began his career as a commission officer in 1958, eventually rising to become a four-star general within the United States Army. Over a thirty-five-year professional military tenure, he moved from field command to the highest levels of national security, ultimately serving as the 65th United States Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005.

Early Development and Education

Born in 1937 in New York City to parents who immigrated from Jamaica, Powell attended Morris High School. He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the City College of New York, where he participated in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. He also completed a Master of Business Administration at George Washington University and attended the National War College and the United States Army Command and General Staff College.

Military Service and Strategy

Following his 1958 commissioning, Powell served in West Germany and completed two tours in Vietnam. His military career saw him rise through numerous command positions, culminating in his role as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993. During this period, he directed operations such as the invasion of Panama and the Persian Gulf War, establishing the Powell Doctrine to guide future national military interventions.

Political and Diplomatic Roles

Powell transitioned into significant civilian policy roles, including Deputy National Security Advisor from 1986 to 1987 and United States National Security Advisor from 1987 to 1989. In 2001, he assumed the role of Secretary of State, becoming the first Black American to lead the foreign affairs ministry. His tenure involved managing international relations until his resignation in 2004.

Honors and Final Years

Throughout his life, Powell was recognized by institutions such as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He remained active as a speaker and author until his death in 2021 at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
