Colette Guillopé

French mathematician

Colette Guillopé, born in 1951, established an academic career centered on partial differential equations and fluid mechanics. A French mathematician, she progressed through specialized institutions including the École normale supérieure de Fontenay-aux-Roses, eventually securing her doctorate at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique and a thèse d'état from the University of Paris-Sud.

Academic Training and Research

Guillopé completed her doctoral work in 1977. Her doctoral research was followed in 1983 by a thèse d'état conducted under the supervision of Roger Temam at the University of Paris-Sud. Her primary research focus throughout her career has involved fluid mechanics and partial differential equations, fields that interface with physics and computing.

Institutional Tenure

Her primary professional base has been Paris 12 Val de Marne University. Serving as a professor emerita, she also holds the position of gender officer at the institution. Her work at the university occurred during a period when the foundations of mathematics were subject to intense academic scrutiny and increased specialization.

Professional Associations and Advocacy

Guillopé played an active role in representing the interests of women within the scientific community. She was a founding member of the association Femmes et mathématiques in 1987, serving as its president from 1996 to 1998. Subsequently, she led the organization Femmes et Sciences between 2004 and 2008, promoting the visibility of female mathematicians.

Recognition

In 2016, she received recognition for her professional contributions by being appointed as an officer in the Legion of Honour. This promotion followed her earlier service as a knight in the same order.
