Born in 1931 in Aurora, Illinois, Cussler grew up in Alhambra, California, where he attended Alhambra High School. He earned his Eagle Scout rank at age 14. After two years at Pasadena City College, he enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Serving as a flight engineer and aircraft mechanic for the Military Air Transport Service, he reached the rank of sergeant. Upon his military discharge, he entered the advertising industry, working as a copywriter and creative director. His commercial production work received international recognition, including an award at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
