His performance in the 2002 film 28 Days Later marked a breakthrough, leading to prominent roles in the 2005 thriller Red Eye, the Irish war drama The Wind That Shakes the Barley in 2006, and the science fiction production Sunshine in 2007. His portrayal of a transgender woman in the 2005 comedy-drama Breakfast on Pluto secured his first Golden Globe nomination.

Murphy established a consistent creative partnership with filmmaker Christopher Nolan, appearing in The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Dunkirk.
