The 40th prime minister of South Korea, Chung Un-chan, assumed office on 30 September 2009 after a parliamentary confirmation process marked by intense debate regarding regional administration plans.
Academic Foundation
Born on 21 March 1947 in Gongju, Chung completed his secondary education at Kyunggi High School. He earned a bachelor of arts in economics from Seoul National University in 1970 and a master's degree from Miami University in 1972. In 1978, he received a Doctor of Philosophy in economics from Princeton University, having authored a dissertation titled Toward a theory of the price setting banking firm.
Professional Development
Chung served as a business associate and assistant professor at Columbia University from 1976 to 1978. He returned to South Korea to join the economics faculty at Seoul National University later that year. Over the subsequent decades, he held visiting positions at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Ruhr University Bochum. He also served as the president of Seoul National University between 2002 and 2006.

Beyond university administration, Chung contributed to various government and research bodies. He chaired the Financial Development Committee within the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Committee on National Pension Development. He held leadership roles in the Korean Money and Finance Association and the Korean Economic Association. Although courted as a potential candidate for the 2007 presidential election, he chose not to join the Uri Party.
Premiership
Nominated by President Lee Myung-bak, Chung served as prime minister for ten months. His tenure was dominated by the controversy surrounding the development of Sejong City. He argued against the relocation of government ministries to the region, citing potential inefficiency. Following local elections in 2010, he submitted his resignation on 29 July and officially vacated the position on 10 August 2010.
Baseball Administration
Outside of economics and politics, Chung maintained an interest in baseball as a supporter of the Doosan Bears and the New York Yankees. From 2018 to 2020, he served as the 22nd commissioner of the Korea Baseball Organization.
