Early Education and Industrial Rise
After graduating from Yongsan High School in 1980, Chung pursued higher education both domestically and abroad. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Korea University in 1985 before attending the University of Oxford. In 1988, he completed a master’s degree in politics, philosophy, and economics. Shortly after, he joined the Hyundai Motor Company in November 1988, eventually ascending to the position of chairman and CEO, which he held from January 1996 until March 1999.

In February 1999, Chung became the chairman of HDC Hyundai Development Company, a role he maintained until May 2018. The firm, founded in 1976, has overseen the construction of over 400,000 residential units including major developments like Samsung-dong IPARK and Suwon IPARK CITY. Under his management, the company expanded into diverse sectors such as IT, leisure, duty-free retail, and asset management, while maintaining its core focus on infrastructure and real estate.
Governance in Professional Football
Chung entered the football industry by chairing Ulsan Hyundai FC between 1994 and 1996, followed by roles at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC and Busan I’Park FC. He served as president of the K League from 2011 to 2013, addressing match-fixing controversies during his tenure. He later served as president of the Korea Football Association until his resignation in July 2026. His international involvement includes serving on the FIFA Council since 2017 and holding various committee positions within the Asian Football Confederation.
