Early Development and International Entry
Gayle began his formal training at the Lucas Cricket Club in Kingston. His early potential was evident during the 1998 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he served as a top scorer for the Windies. In July 2001, he reached his maiden Test century against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. His proficiency grew, leading to a match-saving 317-run innings against South Africa in 2005. This performance made him the fourth West Indian to carry his bat in a Test innings. Later that year, he was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect following occurrences of dizziness during matches, eventually undergoing corrective surgery.
T20 Dominance and League Records
Gayle achieved global prominence in the T20 format, notably scoring the first century in international T20 cricket with 117 runs against South Africa during the 2007 World Twenty20. His 2013 performance for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he scored 175 runs from 66 balls, stands as the fastest century in T20 history. He also secured success in the Indian Premier League, winning the Most Valuable Player award in 2011 and the Orange Cap in 2012.
International Milestones and Retirement
Throughout his career, he contributed to West Indies victories in the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, as well as the 2012 and 2016 ICC World Twenty20 tournaments. He holds the record for the most international caps for the West Indies. In August 2019, he played his 301st and final ODI match against India. He was subsequently included in the ICC T20I Team of the Decade in December 2020.
