The Mann Deshi Mahila Sahkari Bank, established by Chetna Gala Sinha in 1997, became the first financial institution in India managed by and for rural women. By successfully lobbying the Reserve Bank of India to grant a cooperative license, Sinha created a dedicated infrastructure for female micro-entrepreneurs that eventually expanded to include business schools and community radio initiatives.
Academic and Activist Foundations
Born in Mumbai in 1959, Sinha pursued formal education in the city throughout the 1970s and 1980s. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Commerce followed by a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Mumbai in 1982. During her formative years, she was influenced by the political activism surrounding Jayaprakash Narayan, which helped shape her future approach to social entrepreneurship.

In 1996, an initial application to establish a bank was rejected by the Reserve Bank of India because several promoting members lacked formal literacy. In response, Sinha organized village-level literacy training. After five months, she returned to the regulators with the women and a revised application. The license was granted, and the bank launched with a working capital of 708,000 rupees raised from 1,335 members. By 2018, the institution had provided over 50 million US dollars in loans to female micro-entrepreneurs.
Expanding Social Infrastructure
Beyond banking, the Mann Deshi Foundation manages specialized business schools and a community radio network to foster financial literacy. These training modules, which utilize interactive tools such as Monopoly, correlate with an average annual income increase of 13,200 rupees for participating women. Following the 2016 national demonetization, the organization facilitated rural currency exchange by sourcing coins from the State Bank of India to trade for invalidated 500 rupee notes.
Global Recognition and Appointments
Sinha has earned numerous fellowships, including positions at Yale, the Schwab Foundation, and Ashoka. In January 2018, she served as a co-chair for the 48th World Economic Forum in Davos. She also serves as a member of the BRICS Women's Business Alliance and was appointed to the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council in 2022. Her national honors include the Nari Shakti Puraskar, which is India's highest civilian award for women.
