The 1966 Hong Kong film Come Drink with Me transformed Cheng Pei-pei into a pioneering figure in martial arts cinema, establishing the swordswoman archetype that would define her career. Often referred to as the Queen of Swords, she bridged the gap between traditional wuxia storytelling and modern international film through her discipline in dance and Mandarin-language performance.
Early Life and Studio Training
Born in Shanghai in 1946, Cheng spent her youth navigating complex political circumstances following the Second World War. After moving to Hong Kong in 1960, she joined the Shaw Brothers Studio training programme in 1963. Her background in ballet served as a foundation for the rigorous physical demands of early wuxia productions. She debuted in the 1965 film The Lotus Lamp before securing her first leading role in the Taiwanese drama Lovers' Rock.

International Reemergence
Cheng returned to the screen in the 1993 comedy Flirting Scholar. Her career saw a major international resurgence with the 2000 release of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, where she played the role of Jade Fox, a performance that earned her a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.
