Charli XCX

British singer (born 1992)

Charlotte Emma Aitchison, performing as Charli XCX, emerged from the illicit warehouse rave scene of East London to become a definitive force in modern pop. Since securing a recording contract with Asylum Records in 2010, the Cambridge-born musician has navigated the transition from underground demos to multi-award-winning albums and expansive cinematic collaborations, consistently redefining the boundaries of electronic music.

Early Development and Rave Beginnings

Born in 1992 to parents Shameera and Jon Aitchison, the future artist spent her youth in Start Hill, Essex, while attending Bishop's Stortford College. By age 14, she secured a loan to record her debut album, 14, and began sharing music via Myspace. This digital presence led to performances at underground raves, where she adopted the stage name derived from her old MSN Messenger handle. Despite later criticizing her initial work as gimmicky, these early years provided the foundation for her creative trajectory before she enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art, which she eventually left to pursue music full-time.

Commercial Breakthrough and Songwriting

Her professional trajectory shifted significantly in 2012 when she contributed to Icona Pop’s global success, I Love It. She followed this with her 2013 studio debut, True Romance, and the 2014 mainstream hit Fancy, a collaboration with Iggy Azalea. Her sophomore album, Sucker, released later that year, produced the successful singles Break the Rules and Doing It. Beyond her own discography, she established a prolific career as a songwriter, penning tracks for artists including Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes, and Camila Cabello.

Experimental Sound and Brat Era

Starting in 2015, she began a pivotal collaboration with the PC Music collective, leading to the experimental EP Vroom Vroom and subsequent projects like Number 1 Angel and Pop 2. Her output during the pandemic, How I'm Feeling Now, earned critical acclaim, while her 2022 record Crash provided her first number-one album in the UK and Australia. The 2024 album Brat reached similar commercial heights, spawning the hit Apple and the remix single Guess featuring Billie Eilish. The success of Brat led to three Grammy wins and triggered a cultural movement, further expanding into film projects such as the 2026 production, The Moment.

Cinematic Pursuits and Recent Releases

Beyond her recording work, the artist has moved into independent cinema. Roles in 2025 titles including Erupcja, Sacrifice, and 100 Nights of Hero were followed by 2026 appearances in I Want Your Sex and Faces of Death. Her 2026 musical output included the albums Wuthering Heights and Music, Fashion, Film, with the former serving as a soundtrack to a film of the same name. Throughout this period, she has maintained a focus on expanding her repertoire across both audio and visual mediums.
