Chad Hurley (b. 1977) — Biography & Facts

The sale of YouTube to Google in October 2006 for $1.65 billion established Chad Hurley as a prominent figure in the growth of digital media. As a co-founder of the platform, he transitioned from designing early branding at PayPal to managing the architecture of global video sharing throughout the mid-2000s.

Early Development and PayPal

Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1977, Hurley attended Twin Valley High School, where he participated in the Technology Student Association and cross-country athletics. He graduated from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1999 with a BA in Fine Art. His early professional career began at PayPal, a division of eBay. During his tenure there, he was responsible for designing the company's original logo.

YouTube Co-founding and Transition

In 2005, Hurley co-founded YouTube alongside Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. He focused primarily on the development of video-sharing features and tagging systems. Following the acquisition by Google in 2006, SEC filings indicated that Hurley received 694,087 Google shares directly and an additional 41,232 shares held in a trust, with a total valuation estimated at $345.6 million based on the stock price in February 2007. He served as chief executive officer until October 2010, at which point he stepped down to serve as an advisor to the company, replaced by Salar Kamangar.

Entrepreneurial Ventures and Sports Investment

Hurley launched the smartphone-based video editing service MixBit in August 2013, which allowed users to record and edit short clips. Outside of software development, he participated in the Formula One racing circuit as a major investor in the US F1 Team, which ceased operations in March 2010. His investment portfolio also includes minority ownership stakes in the Golden State Warriors, the Los Angeles Football Club, and the English Premier League club Leeds United, the latter of which he joined in January 2021.
