César Loustau

architect (1926–2011)

César J. Loustau documented the evolution of Uruguayan built environments through a prolific career as an architect, writer, and photographer. Born in Montevideo in 1926, he spent his life analyzing the structural heritage of his nation while contributing to the expansion of existing educational institutions. He remained an active voice in historical scholarship until his death in 2011.

Architectural Practice and Education

Loustau completed his professional training at the Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo at the University of the Republic. As a practicing architect in Uruguay, his portfolio included significant technical projects such as the renovation and subsequent expansion of the Elbio Fernandez School and Lyceum. His work navigated the constraints of local planning laws, materials, and regional climate conditions.

Historiographic Contributions

Beyond his design work, Loustau served as a dedicated chronicler of Uruguayan architectural history. He held a position as a full member of the Instituto Histórico y Geográfico del Uruguay. His research efforts were disseminated through regular contributions to the press, including articles for the Sunday Supplement of the newspaper El Día and entries for El País.

Published Scholarship

Loustau authored several monographs examining the intersection of foreign influence and local development. In 1990, he published La influencia de Italia en la arquitectura uruguaya, followed in 1994 by a biography titled Vida y obra de Julio Vilamajó. His extensive output included the 1995 book Influence of France in Uruguayan architecture and, in 2003, a comprehensive analysis co-authored with Fernando Chebataroff titled Uruguay: la herencia ibérica en arquitectura y urbanismo. His final major contribution was a two-volume series released in 2010 titled La arquitectura uruguaya del siglo XX en el Uruguay.
