Carlos Marín

Recording his first album at age eight, Spanish baritone Carlos Marín began a professional trajectory that spanned five decades. His early introduction to music in Germany and Spain transitioned from television talent contests to lead roles in musical theatre, culminating in his role as a founding member of the global vocal quartet Il Divo.

Early Development and Television Success

Born in 1968 in Rüsselsheim am Main, Marín produced his debut album, The Little Caruso, at age eight under Pierre Kartner, featuring tracks such as Granada. After moving between the Netherlands and Spain, he gained national visibility in his teens and twenties through Spanish Television programs like Gente Joven and Nueva Gente. This early exposure provided the foundation for his formal training in piano and solfeggio, followed by vocal instruction under teachers including Alfredo Kraus, Montserrat Caballé, and Jaume Aragall.

Musical Theatre and Opera Career

Marín established himself on the stage during the 1990s, appearing in productions such as Les Misérables as Marius and Grease as Vince Fontaine. His stage career also included roles in Beauty and the Beast, Man from La Mancha, and Peter Pan, where he occasionally served as musical director. He contributed his voice to films, including the Spanish version of Cinderella and The Nightmare Before Christmas. His operatic repertoire included La Traviata, La Bohème, and Madame Butterfly, alongside appearances in zarzuela productions at the Sabatini Gardens.

Global Commercial Achievement with Il Divo

In 2003, Marín joined Il Divo, an international quartet including Urs Bühler, Sébastien Izambard, and David Miller. The group achieved rapid commercial success; their self-titled 2004 debut reached number four on the Billboard charts and sold five million copies globally. Subsequent releases, including Ancora, Siempre, and The Promise, maintained this trajectory, with The Promise topping UK charts in 2008. The ensemble received the Classical Brit Award for Artist of the Decade in 2011 and served as musical ambassadors to Japan.

Solo Work and Final Years

Parallel to Il Divo, Marín launched a solo show in 2011 at the Compac Gran Via Theater in Madrid. His solo tour expanded to Mexico, the US, and South America, resulting in a live CD/DVD release in 2016. In December 2021, while on tour, he was hospitalized in Manchester, England, following a viral infection. He died on 19 December 2021 at the age of 53 and was buried at La Almudena Cemetery in Madrid.
