Born Karl Ludwig Bonifacius Kleiber in 1930 Berlin, the son of conductor Erich Kleiber, this musician famously abandoned his initial studies in chemistry at ETH Zurich to pursue a career on the podium. Known for his intense focus and infrequent appearances, he left a small but highly regarded discography before his death in 2004.
Early Career and Operatic Training
After choosing music over science, Kleiber began as a répétiteur at the Gärtnerplatz Theatre in Munich in 1952. His formal debut occurred in 1954 with the operetta Gasparone at the Potsdam theatre. He served as chapelmaster from 1958 to 1964 at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. During these years, he managed a vast repertoire including works by Verdi, Puccini, and Strauss, gaining experience across institutions in Düsseldorf, Duisburg, and Zurich.

Kleiber made his British debut in 1966 conducting Alban Berg's Wozzeck at the Edinburgh Festival. His 1974 debut at Bayreuth featured Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. Though he famously declined the offer to succeed Herbert von Karajan at the Berlin Philharmonic in 1989, he maintained connections to the Bavarian State Opera. His work is archived through video recordings of symphonies by Beethoven, Brahms, and Mozart, as well as his notable direction of the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concerts in 1989 and 1992.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout his life, Kleiber received numerous state honors, including the Knight Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1980. His contributions were further recognized with the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art, the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art, and the Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts. He was also a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.
