Carl Jensen Burrau, who lived from 1867 to 1944, operated at the intersection of celestial mechanics and actuarial science. A graduate of the University of Copenhagen, he spent his career within the academic structures of the Kingdom of Denmark, contributing to the development of methods for processing astronomical data and formalizing statistical insurance mathematics.
Astronomical research
Between 1893 and 1898, Burrau served as an astronomy assistant at the University of Copenhagen observatory. During this period, he focused on the three-body problem, specifically analyzing the orbital mechanics of two equal masses in rotation. His 1895 dissertation addressed the identification of constants from photographic star positions, applying classical methods to improve data accuracy.

Burrau maintained a professional association with Törvald Thiele. This partnership resulted in the development of the Thiele–Burrau method, a technique utilized in mathematical analysis. Their combined efforts reflected the period's broader focus on refining foundations and tightening definitions within the field of mathematics.
Actuarial contributions
Beyond his work in physics and astronomy, Burrau shifted his professional focus toward actuarial mathematics. He taught applied mathematics at the University of Copenhagen and formalized his research in his 1925 publication, Forsikringsstatistikens Grundlag. This text served as a contribution to the study of insurance statistics in Denmark.
